A Glimpse of Amsterdam |
While perhaps most famous for its red light district and
cannabis cafes, Amsterdam is one of the most fun and beautiful
cities in Western Europe, known for its laid back atmosphere and
plenty of activities. Fashionable and diverse, there is plenty to do
in Amsterdam and it has more than its fair share of cultural and
historical attractions as well. Also known for its friendly people
and highly enjoyable cafe culture, it makes it an ideal destination
for all sorts of holidays from family holidays to crazy party
weekends.
The centre of Amsterdam is famous for its charming seventeenth
century architecture and it is also an ideal place to tour on foot
or by bicycle. While strolling around the city exploring the place,
you can enjoy the beautiful gardens, impressive architecture and the
occasional stop in a romantic water-side cafe. One of the many
places worth visiting, especially when the weather is good, is a
particular park; Vondelpark.
Amsterdam’s terraces are bustling with activity throughout the
summer months, making this time of year the best time to enjoy the
city. If you enjoy being outdoors and exploring the place on foot,
while stopping in beer gardens and open air restaurants, you can’t
do much worse than Amsterdam at this time of year.
Shaped like a horseshoe, the central region of Amsterdam is
surrounded by several famous canals. These places are great for
exploring, as the area is full of beautiful gabled houses. The area
is also easy to navigate and there are plenty of reliable public
transport options including trams. Pedestrian passages are also
abundant, making it an ideal place to explore on foot. The city’s
size is also quite manageable.
Shopping options are also plentiful in Amsterdam, and with a very
famous and trendy fashion scene, there is also something to suit
everyone. You can find everything from small boutiques in winding
alleyways to diverse shopping centres with plenty to choose from.
You will also have no difficulty finding those common souvenir shops
and market stalls, which are dotted around the city.
However, undoubtedly one of the things that Amsterdam is most famous
for, is its party scene. With an extremely laid back attitude, many
groups of people have been visiting Amsterdam on party holidays for
years. The Red Light District, De Wallen, is also extremely well
known, or infamous if you look at it that way. This area is also in
the city centre, and in spite of its reputation, it has a high
police presence and is perfectly safe for the most part. There are
also many bars and restaurants amongst historic buildings and plenty
of museums. It is also home to the oldest church in Amsterdam, an
impressive piece of gothic architecture which is definitely worth a
visit.
A captivating city full of energy, Amsterdam is sure to please any
type of traveller, and with its diverse party scene and plenitude of
restaurants, bars and historical and cultural attractions, it is not
a place that is easy to get bored in.
